fallen leaves: a ballad

for once was i like you--brown, ashen
before leaves we all had fallen
green and glaring did i gallantly rustle
until a gust of wind had me whittled

'tis a lesson as old as time
there's a reason and a rhyme
everything passes, things become
budding, blossom, then beyond

where else would seeds fall but the ground
nothing tossed or sprinkled can be found
when earth and sky in the end did meet
to peace and silence 'neath one's feet
