Qinoth (587 B.C.E.)*

would i be allowed to speak
and tarnish the meadow
of crystallised past,
would i sing the hummed melody
of reverberating future,
and leave the passion
of mystified dreams,
would i echo the hollow sound
of fragmented forever
and dance to the tune
of the maudlin's pipe,
would i hear the dirge
of sheltered laughter
and dig the beauty
of the fertile soil

when the rose withers
and the lamb bleats,
when planters break
the unshod feet,
when smiles fade
and lore forgotten,

(*Qinoth is Hebrew for "dirges." On 9 August 587 B.C.E., Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians.)
